        Five Point Someone : What not to do at IIT is the first novel written by Chetan Bhagat in 2004.This book deals with the story of three friends, Hari, Ryan and Alok. Hari is the narrator of the book. Three of them are Mechanical Engineering students at IIT. Five Point Someone is the story of three friends whose measly five -point something GPAs come in the way of everything - their friendship ,their love life, their future etc. 

               The book mainly focuses on the effort of the trio to cope up with the system in IIT. They have a bad start in IIT , three of them screw up in the first class quiz itself. Three of them struggles a lot to survive in IIT. In the meanwhile Hari fell in love with Neha daughter of Prof. Cherian, head of Mechanical Engineering department of their college. Prof. Cherian is a very strict person. As the head of department he always want his students to score high GPAs. Prof.Cherian have a daughter and a son.Five years ago his son had died in a rail track accident, At that time they thought it was an accident but later they realised that he killed himself beacuse he did not get into IIT. This information changes his attitude. He realize that his life is meaningless. He scored high marks , got highly paid job but he found that he doesn't have a life. Towards the end three of them completed their graduation successfully and secure jobs.

 This book criticize current educational system which values grades more than anything. The mental pressure and strain which a student passes through. This book says us that college life is not about grades, high marks, exams. It also about having friends, having fun ,having memories and adding color to life. The Hindi movie 3 Idiots and Nanban in Tamil is based on this book.
