Half Girlfriend is the sixth Novel of Chetan Bhagat which shares the love story of Madhav Jha ,a rural boy from Bihar and Riya Somani, a rich girl from Delhi. The book begins where Madhav comes to meet the author and leaves behind some journals of his half girlfriend,who he believes has died. After reading those journals, the author calls him in the next morning and hear his story.
Madhav and Riya both were students of St. Stephen's college ,Delhi. Madhav was not good at English but he is a good basketball player, So he get admission through sports quota. Riya, a rich and beautiful girl from Delhi is also selected through sports quota. Madhav and Riya both are good in basketball. Their association with basketball make them close . Madhav wants to make Riya his girlfriend but she refuses. Finally she agrees to be his half girlfriend i.e more than a friend but lesser than a girlfriend. Later Riya and Madhav move apart for some reasons, Riya marries her childhood friend Rohan and settled in London.Madhav decides to settle in his hometown Dumraon and take care the school run by his mother ,Rani Sahiba. Seeing the pathetic condition of the school Madhav decides to meet the MLA but he refuses to help . From him Madhav come to know about the Bill Gate's visit to schools in Bihar.Madhav decides to convince Bill Gate's to fund his school. For that he needed to present a speech in English before him.
Madhav meet Riya in the course of his struggles and come to know that she is now a divorcee. Riya divorced with Rohan for his relationship with another women. Riya help Madhav in preparing the speech and he successful in fundraising. Riya left the school after the speech and leaves a letter for him. In that letter she states that she is in the last stage of lung cancer and she will survive only for the next three months. Madhav tries to find her but she cut all her connections with India and leave India. After three years from Riya's journals Madhav find out that she had faked her Cancer. Madhav goes to New York in search of her .After searching for months ,he finds her at Cafe Wha .
Three and half later the author visits Madhav's school in Dumraon and seeing that both Madhav and Riya running the school with their two years old son ,Shyam.
In 2017 movie named Half Girlfriend was released based on the novel Half Girlfriend. It stars Arjun Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor.
